Achondrite (diogenite)
One
entirely crusted stone, weighing 217.6 g was purchased
in Erfoud in 2004 September. Classification and
mineralogy (M. Bourot-Denise, MNHNP): the major
mineral (95 vol%) is orthopyroxene, in large crystals.
Plagioclase is rare, making blebs (<50 µm)
in spaces between pyroxene crystals, opaque blebs
(Fe-Ni, troilite, chromite) are aligned inside
pyroxene crystals; a few silica areas. Orthopyroxene
is very homogeneous, Fs26.5 ± 0.8 Wo3.3 ± 0.3.
Magnetic susceptibility 3.13 (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE,
Aix en Provence). Estimated shock stage S3; weathering
grade W3. Specimens: type specimen 22.5 g and one
polished mount, MNHNP; main mass with Philippe
Thomas.
